AuthorAID Grant to Attend 2011 Summer Research Writing Course

BACKGROUND: Researchers from resource-poor settings tend to have difficulty publishing and otherwise communicating their work, mainly because the authors often lack sufficient writing and editorial skills. To help address this challenge, the AuthorAID project of the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) provides support to researchers through mentoring, networking, freely available resources, and research-writing workshops.

To provide further publication-related training to a researcher from a developing country, an AuthorAID at INASP grant to attend a summer research writing course is now available.

BENEFITS: The grant will enable a researcher from a developing country to attend a 3-to-4-week research writing course and subsequently travel to present the work at a conference. The course will be given at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA, in summer 2011. The grant will cover the full tuition (up to $2,000), including access to Texas A&M University library resources, during the grant period. Housing on the Texas A&M campus also will be covered fully (up to $1,000). The recipient will receive a certificate of participation after completing the research writing course.

The grant recipient will be responsible for the costs of travel, food, and health insurance related to participating in the course. INASP will provide $2,500 to the grant recipient. This funding is to be used for two purposes: (1) to help defray expenses related to travel, food, and health insurance related to participating in the course and (2) to help cover the expenses associated with presenting the work at a conference.

ELIGIBILITY: The recipient must:

1. reside in and be a citizen of one of the INASP partner countries (for a list of eligible countries, please see the INASP website) or one of the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) priority countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zambia.
2. be working at an academic institution or research institute.
3. be working on a paper for submission to a peer-reviewed journal and presentation at a conference.
4. be proficient in English.
Priority will be given to a candidate with strong potential to build local capacity in scientific writing and editing upon completion of the course.
